The Freshwater medium appears deceptively barren at first
glance, the still water however, harbour some rather special
inhabitants. Perhaps the most remarkable of these is the tiny
Back-Swimmer Beatle. Growing to 20mm in length it is well
designed for the water environment in which it dwells.
A torpedo shaped body and a set of oar-like rear legs lend
themselves to quick propulsion through the water. Beneath the
abdomen two grooves covered with fine hair imprison bubbles
of air enabling the Back-Swimmer to venture beneath the
surface on hunting expeditions. A proficient diver long before
the advent of SCUBA ........
